Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Midresha located?

The Midrasha is located in Kiryat HaYovel, which is a neighborhood in Yerushalayim, about a 25 minute bus ride away from the center of town.

What is the dorm situation? How many girls to a room? How many to a bathroom?

Midreshet Yeud consists of one building that has both classrooms and dorm rooms. All learning is done on the bottom floor and there are three floors of dorm rooms. Each room for three roommates has three beds, two closets, two desks, a sink, a stove top, a heater/air conditioner, and a bathroom. Each bathroom is equipped with a shower, sink, and toilet. Though the rooms are modestly sized, there is still some room to add personal touches such as drawers, rugs, or mirrors. There are approximately twenty rooms per floor. There is also no elevator.

If you choose to not go away for a Shabbat or Chag can you stay on campus for Shabbat?

There is almost always the option to stay in the Midrasha for Shabbat. There are some exceptions such as when the building is closed for certain Chagim. However, you must inform the Em Bayit of your intention to stay as early in the week as possible. If you do stay in for Shabbat, the Midrasha is not responsible for your meals and you are responsible for procuring all the food you plan to eat on Shabbat.

Are the classes b'ivrit? Is there an ulpan?

At Midreshet Yeud, there are three tracks which the girls are grouped into. Each track has a distinguishing feature based on what the girls want in their Torah learning experience: Shiurim, Beit Midrash, and Ivrit Kallah. The Shiurim track is geared towards a girl who might not have done as much learning previously and/or enjoys the lecture setting a bit more. Beit Midrash is focused mainly on Chevruta time. The classes are for longer chunks of time and the girls do more of the learning on their own. Ivrit Kallah is the track that is taught primarily in Hebrew. There are three ulpan tracks as well: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. They are offered during normal class periods, but they are not requirements. Girls are also encouraged to take Israeli classes if they fit into their schedules.

What is the expected dress code?

The dress code at Midreshet Yeud is a simple one. Shirts must reach the elbow and the neckline must be appropriate (meaning, know your own chest and neckline). Skirts must cover the knee at all times and when sitting. Slits are permitted provided they reach no further than the knee. Pants under skirts are fine. Obviously nothing too tight or inappropriate written on it. See? Easy!

Is there a lot of free time?

There is a good amount of free time at Midreshet Yeud. Between each class there is approximately 15-20 minutes between each class; enough time to run upstairs for a couple of minutes, to grab a cup of coffee, or to run across the street to the bank. Lunch break is two hours long and dinner is an hour and a half. On Mondays and Wednesdays, your lunch break depends on when you return from your Shirut Leumi. Most times it ranges from an hour and a half to two and a half hours. Monday night is the night off, which begins at 6:30 PM and ends at 12 PM. Classes end every night at 10 PM and girls are allowed to go out, however they must be back at 12. There are no classes on Fridays, and on Sundays, classes begin at 2:30 PM. Girls are encouraged to go on the Midreshet Yeud weekly trip on Sundays, but it is not mandatory and girls can sleep, go shopping, or hang out until classes in the afternoon.

How many evenings did you find yourself going into town?

Though Ben Yehuda St. and Emek Refaim are about a half an hour to forty-five minute bus ride, girls go there to see friends quite often. The bus route is easy and the most annoying part is the amount of time it takes. It also varies on the time of the year. During the winter, fewer girls want to go out because it is cold and rainy. However, both places are the top American hot spots.

How long are the classes?

Each class varies from one hour to two and a half, depending on the day. Every class is only taught once a week, therefore each class needs to be for a longer chunk of time. The classes in the evenings, after eight o’ clock, are each an hour, and the rest of the classes vary from there, depending on the schedule. Most classes are mixed with both lecture and chevruta time.

What is the cleaning situation?

Midrasha girls are responsible for their own cleanliness. The Midrasha is responsible for cleaning the hallways and some of the classrooms, but every girl’s room is her own domain. No one will come and clean it for you. You must do your own sweeping, take out your own garbage, and do your own laundry.
Downstairs, there are two washing machines, and one dryer. One wash and dry is five shekel each. You are also responsible for buying your own detergent.

Important features of Kiryat HaYovel

Though Midreshet Yeud is not in the center of town, Kiryat HaYovel has its own little center, literally, down the street that provides the girls with almost everything they need on a day to day basis:
- Supersol (Supermarket)
- Ma’afeh Caf? Bakery
- Pharmacy
- The Mifletzet (the famous monster slide)
- Yarn Store
- Bank Hapoalim (across the street)
- Bank Discount (across the street)
- Several cheap stores (Makolet and trinket shops)
- 2 Pizza stores
- Flame Burger Restaurant
- Hair Salons
- Dry Cleaner
- Gym
- The 18 bus line: will take you directly to the center of town, right outside the Midrasha
- The 19, 24 Aleph: will take you to town or Malcha Mall, across the street
- Malcha Mall (approx half hour walk from the Midrasha)

The Bus System

Everyone knows that the bus system is slightly daunting at first. However, most girls at Midreshet Yeud do use the buses as they are very convenient and cheaper than cabs. The 18, 19, and 24 Aleph are the most popular bus lines for Yeud girls and all three are very direct and easy bus lines. With the purchase of a Kartisiat Noar (Teen bus pass), you get 20 rides for approximately ten dollars and you don’t have to constantly search for change.

Other facts about Midreshet Yeud:

There are many other nice surprises that Midreshet Yeud provides:

How does Midreshet Yeud handle Safety Issues?

Midreshet Yeud takes the safety of the girls very seriously. Any time there is a reason for heightened security, the Midrasha informs the girls immediately and depending on the level of danger, the administration will act accordingly. Whether it is advising girls to avoid taking buses or busy areas, to complete lockdown, Yeud will keep the girls safe and keep them updated on the situation.

What did you choose for your volunteer work?

There are many options for Shirut Leumi. For a complete list, see here. Shirut Leumi is done on Mondays and Wednesdays from around 8:30 AM until 2 PM. Girls can do the same thing twice a week or split their time and do something else the other day.
