Scholarships

If you were wandering about financing your year in Israel, there are many solutions for any situation. Various sholarship options are availble for students interested in studying in year-long programmes in Israel. Students may apply for as many as they so wish.

Please read about these options and chose which ones suit you most. It is recommended that you apply as soon as possible as it might take from a few days to weeks to process. The amount of the tuition scholarship depends on the need of each student.

Once you have read through and tried out the options that apply to you, please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with, going forward. We also request that if you find any other good financial aid options that you inform us so we can publicise them to help other students.

 

Here are a few of the most popular options:

MASA:

 

Offers: $1000 grant tuition scholarship (for North America residents for UK residents)

Merit Scholarship:

Merit Scholarship Offers limited funding to students planning to travel to Israel for their first time, either on a summer or year long programme. It is availible to students, regardless of financial need, who want to participate in an approved Israel Experience Programme.

To qualify you need to:

fill out the application form. (print)
write a brief essay.
submit one letter of reccomendation from your principal, teacher or rabbi.

Rabbi K:

Offers: varying amounts to suit the need – airfare and tuition scholarships.

"Rabbi Benzion Klatzko, National Director of College Outreach, offers airfare and tuition scholarships for students to go to Israel on various Jewish experience trips. He offers scholarships to those students that have already been on a Jewish experience trip and now want to return and study in select Yeshivot or Seminaries in or around Jerusalem. The amount of the tuition scholarship depends on the need."

Alisa Flatow Memorial Fund:

Offers: $3500 tuition scholarship.

To qualify, you need to:

  1. be a high school graduate,
  2. not currently be in Israel,
  3. intend to study Torah at a Yeshiva or Seminary in Israel, and
  4. show "academic promise in religious studies." – From their Web site

Your Local Rabbi, Synagogue:

Offers: ranging from $150 – $500 tuition and airfare scholarship


Most Rabbis, synagogues, or kollels have money set aside from the community help students get to Israel. You won‘t usually find this scholarship listed on their Web site or in their brochures. However, check with your Rabbi if he, or someone he knows can help you pay for your trip and (part of) your experience to and in Israel. Usually they have a fund, or know someone who can help you pay for part of your studies in Israel.

Bureau of Jewish Education:

Offers: varying amounts – airfare & tuition scholarships

In the United States, many cities have a Bureau of Jewish Education that gives out scholarships. Each of the Bureau's below offer scholarships to study at a Seminary or Yeshiva in Israel. Please contact them directly for information.

PLEASE NOTE: The Bureau's of Jewish Education listed below only give scholarships to people who are located in and or around their city. Please do not contact them if you’re from a different area.

Buffalo, NY: If you’re in the Buffalo area, to apply for the Israel Scholarship Fund, contact the Foundation of Jewish Philanthropies. Click here to request an application.

Cleveland, OH : If you’re in the Cleveland area, please contact Helen Wolf, Israel Programs Director: (216) 371–0446.

Indianapolis, IN: If you‘re in the Indianapolis area, please contact their office: (317) 255–3124.

Los Angeles, CA: If you‘re in the Los Angeles area, please contact their office: (323) 761–8605.

Orange County, CA: If you‘re in the Orange County area, contact their office at: (949) 435–3450.

Phoenix, AZ: If you‘re in the Phoenix area, contact the at: Israel Center or (480) 634–4900, extension: 1119.

Rhode Island: Grants and scholarships are available for Greater Rhode Island residents for high school or college educational programs in Israel. Please contact Shira Garber Strosberg for more Information:                                       (401) 331-0956, extension: 181.

San Francisco, CA: If you’re from the San Francisco Bay Area, contact Janet Rothman, Financial Aid Director: (415) 751-6983 extension: 107.

Jewish Federation:

Offers: $250 – $3000 tuition scholarship

In the United States, most cities have a location Jewish Federation that gives out scholarships. Each Federation has its own requirements for scholarships.

To apply, contact your location Federation. To locate your local federation, go to:

  1. The Federations of North America‘s Jewish Finder Web site.
  2. Go to the Hagshama Web site which lists a large number of local federations.

 

TIP: The only way to get money from your federation is TO CALL their office. DO NOT email them if you want to get a scholarship.

When you call the Federation, ask to speak with the Financial Aid Director or to the person in charge of scholarships. Explain your situation to them (i.e. you're 17-19, you want to study at a Seminary in Israel, how can they help your financial situation?). Ask them if you‘re eligible to apply to any of their scholarships.

If they have a scholarship for which you're eligible, they'll either email you an application to fill out or send you to their web site where you can fill out the online application.
